A Statement Regarding the Results of the 2020 Election

While the remaining voting results come in it has become increasingly clear that Joe Biden has won the election. We are heartened to see such an explicit rejection of the fascist demagoguery that Donald Trump has peddled for the last four years. With appropriate caution to the various means by which the Trump administration might still seek to retain or seize power, we look forward to the end to the cruelty and terror that his administration has brought.

It is also with bitter grief that we write, in full awareness of the issues and the peoples left behind in this vain contest for power. In January the sun will still rise on a country dying from inadequate healthcare, working long into retirement age, constantly hounded by the police, with occupying forces across the planet, and just a decade to avert an existential ecological catastrophe.

We know that there’s still so much work to be done and we know that we can do it. Work like outreach to at-risk tenants to help them fight against landlords who would evict them from their home. Work like building community gardens and mutual aid networks to strengthen the ways in which we look after each other as a community. Work like coming together with coalitions to stop fracked gas pipelines and compressors stations and power plants. Work like preparing you and me and all of our coworkers and neighbors on which way we need to go and what we need to do to rise up as a people to build a society that works for all of us together.

So we hope that you will join us in this work, because we need you and so do the people of Hampton Roads. And it doesn’t happen unless we make it happen, so sign up today for our email list, check out our biweekly meetings, and consider becoming a member of the DSA. Let’s fight for the victory we deserve to win.
